New layout and redesign of residential annex
In the words of the professional
written by Stéfan Marquis, Architect
Conceived and carried out by our architecture studio based in the Old Port of Montreal. The aim of this project, located in the plateau neighbourhood, was to create an independent space for one of the owners children using a 284 square foot residential annex (142 sf per floor). The idea was that he would benefit from being close to the family home while enjoying enhanced privacy and independence. Notions of spatial openness, fluidity and luminosity were explored as vectors for enhanced perception and wellness. A highly sculptural staircase was offered between both floors, inviting to a perpetual motion of the eyes.
After a simple demolition of some of the interior parts of the existing annex, works in plumbing, electricity, new floor structure, metal work and material finishes were undertaken. An important part of the integrated furniture purchases were made from fair price large self-assembly supply stores. The artistic sensitivity and open-mindedness of the owner-client proved to be a key element to the development of a creative and inspiring space.
The technical challenge brought on by the organic staircase was surmounted by way of a tight collaboration between a fearless blacksmith, a laser cutting specialist, a metal bender and an architect.
