Summertime means an increase in your free time. With 68% of Americans traveling during the season, it also means an increase in house guests.
That makes it the perfect time to dive into a diy home project. From organization to home decor, we’ve compiled a fun list of Summer DIYs. Fill your days with these innovative ideas, and we promise you won’t regret it!
Organize Your Canned Foods
We all know that canned goods can clutter cabinets, making them look highly disorganized. With this DIY Canned Goods Organizer, you’ll solve the problem in one day!
This compact, rolling cabinet is perfectly sized to fit between your fridge and a divider wall. It’s ideal for small kitchens that need a boost in storage space.
For this kitchen renovation project, you’ll need:
- 9 – 1×4″ boards cut to 29 1/2″
- 2 – 1×4″ boards cut to 64″
- 1 – Thin board cut to 31 1/2 x 64″
- 4 – 1 1/2 – 2″ Metal Casters
- 7 – 7/16 dowels cut to 30″
- Hammer and Nails
- Screws and Drill
First, create your frame. Connect the 1″x4″ boards in a rectangular shape. Now, attach your dowels. Use your remaining boards to create seven shelves. Pre-drill holes, and wedge the dowels about two inches above each shelf.
Then, you’ll need to attach the thin board to the back of the frame. At this step, you may also choose to paint the inside of the cabinet. You may even opt to line it with cute cabinet or wall paper.
Next, attach the caster wheels to the bottom of the storage cabinet and a knob or handle to the front. These items will allow for easier movement.
You might want to take this project a step further by installing a door slider and stopper. This will prevent you from pulling the cabinet out too far, and all your canned goods crumbling to the floor.
Spruce Up Your Patio
Once your kitchen cleanup is complete, it’s time to move outside! Just a few small DIY projects will help turn your outdoor area from drab to fab.
Add Some Seating
These rope ottomans are perfect for expanding your seating or adding extra comfort to your existing arrangement. All you’ll need is an old tire, medium-sized rope, nylon rope, and a hot glue gun.
First, wrap the tire with nylon rope in a criss-cross pattern. This will give the seat a more rounded shape and add some comfort.
Next, start winding your larger rope around the tire. Begin at the bottom and work your way toward the top. Glue as you go to keep the rope in place.
Once this step is completed, you’re finished! For an added touch of customization, paint the ottoman a cute color or pattern. Just make sure you use a sealant, so that your masterpiece won’t chip off.
Light Up the Night
Outside entertainment in the summer usually occurs at night, since day time temperatures can be grueling. These super classy wine bottle torches will give you and your guests light for nights to come. Plus, they’ll add a dash of elegance to any design.
Each light only costs around $5 to make, and they’ll create a cool dimension in your landscape design. You’ll need the following materials:
- Old Wine Bottle
- 1/2″ Teflon Tape
- Copper Top Plate Connector
- 1″ Split Ring Hanger
- 1/2″ and 3/8″ Copper Coupling
- 1/2″ Copper Cap
- Hex Nuts
- Wood Screws
- Threaded Rod
- Wick and Outdoor Fuel
Start this project off by picking the perfect spot for your light(s). Attach the top plate connector to the area you have chosen. Screw in the rod, and slide on two hex nuts. Tighten one to the bottom, but leave one remaining at the top.
Next, thread the split ring. Secure it between the two hex nuts. Now, for the bottle.
Partially wrap the copper coupling in teflon tape. Slide the wick through the coupling. Fill the bottle with outdoor fuel/oil. A funnel will make this task much easier.
Lastly, simply attach your bottle to your mount. Light your torches, and let the party begin!
Amplify Your Interior Design
We’ve included a few simple projects in this section that will only take you an hour or so to complete. Perfect for that person trying to fit home improvement into their busy schedule. Regardless of the time put in, the following DIY Home Decor items are sure to stun any guest!
Simply grab those old mason jars you have in the cupboard, and paint away! Choose coordinating colors for any room of the house. Orange, pink, and green make a great tropical theme. Use these for flowers, mounted lighting, or storage/organization.
If you’re looking for a festive centerpiece and a craft you can do with the kids, look no further! Simply pick up a few pinecones and paint them yellow. Then, cut strips of green paper. Attach to the top to create an adorable pineapple. Fill a bowl with them for a creative way to decorate your table.
Make a Slated Sign
Are you searching for something new to hang on the wall? Why not make it? You can paint a slated sign to match any home decor theme. If you need an idea to get you started, go ahead and paint a red background with a blue whale. Then, stencil the saying “Oh Whale” around it in white.
